Introduction to Machine Learning in Particle Physics

Jamie Gainer
University of Hawaii

Abstract
Machine learning (ML) is transforming society and with it particle physics.  Specific ML techniques have been part of experimental analyses for several decades, but these techniques, and how they relate to headlines about ML in popular media, are not always well-understood.  I will present an introduction to machine learning, highlighting its use in particle physics. The listener should come away with an understanding of the main ideas and terms and hopefully some ideas about how to incorporate ML into their own research.
